Night Dreaming etching

A compact, monochrome composition of overlapping ovals and planes suggests a seated, bowed figure rendered in fine, incised strokes. Deep cross-hatching and soft smudges define a shadowed background while a patterned cloth on the lap supplies a quiet motif; the paper’s rag texture and delicate tonal gradations hold the trace of each bite of the needle. The restrained palette and rhythmic network of lines create a contemplative stillness, where light is suggested by subtle highlights and denser marks. Joseph Holston’s control of dry-point etching yields an intimate, tactile presence that rewards close looking and lingers in memory.
