Phyllis' art comes from who she is and what she knows. Her ability to breathe life into her collectibles comes from the passion and love that she gives to each one of her creations. She recognizes that all here creativity comes from God, who is her total sources. She is one of the country's most prolific artists. Considered by critics to be a MASTER OF AFRICAN AMERICAN TAPESTRY AND STORY QUILTS. Her color selections and fabric choices are unmatched. Phyllis draws from her experiences to create her expressions of our rich cultural heritage. From an African-American perspective she wishes to share her rich cultural heritage through artistic symbolism, using fabric and textiles from across the globe as well as America. "When I think of the quintessential fabrics and textiles of the world, I look primarily to Africa for her abundant diversity." Fabrics made from indigenous materials that are spun, woven and dyed by hand produce a wealth of creative expression. The character of the fabrics I select possess spirit, personality and passion. "My goal is to capture that essence in my art so that each work connects with your experiences, and you are easily moved by The Spirit of the Cloth." A native New Englander, she was raised in Bloomfield, Connecticut, and is a graduate of Boston University. In the late 1970s she ventured to West Africa for an exploratory adventure where she resided in Senegal for almost two years. Upon her return to the states she settled in Atlanta, Georgia where she continues to live. Phyllis' work has been showcased in galleries throughout the United States and is owned by numerous collectors worldwide. She is also recognized for her corporate commemorative works. Her tapestries and story quilts are among her most innovative creations. You are invited to allow the spirit of the cloth, the poetry of quilting and the legacy of tapestry to touch your soul. |
