Ed Hamilton

Ed Hamilton was born in 1947 in Cincinnati, Ohio and is a resident of Louisville, Kentucky. Ed is a graduate of the Louisville School of Art class of 1969. In December 2004 Ed received a Doctor of Arts honorary Degree from the University of Louisville, and was the commencement speaker. Ed has been awarded numerous honory degrees, awards and recognition including the 1999 Distinguished Achiever of the year. In 1996 he was the recipient of the Governor’s Artist Award in the Arts. His public work, the “Spirit of Freedom” the first National Memorial in the District of Columbia has achieved worldwide acclaim. This tribute to the Colored Soldiers and Sailors of the Civil War, which now stands at 10th and U Streets NW in Washington D.C., was dedicated on July 18, 1998. Other public memorials of note include - The Amistad Memorial in New Haven,CT. 1992 - Joe Louis Memorial dedicated at Cobo Hall in Detroit, MI. 1987 - Booker T. Washington Memorial dedicated in Hampton, VA. 1984 - Whitney M. Young Jr. memorial, dedicated in Frankfort, KY. 1998 - Lenny Lyles Memorial dedicatedin Louisville, KY. 2000 - The York Memorial (slave who led Lewis & Clark Expedition) dedicated in Lou, KY. 2003 - The Abraham Lincoln Memorial in Louisville KY. 2009 Hamilton has numerous works in museum, private and corporate collections across the country, including J. B. Speed Art Museum permanent collection in Louisville, Kentucky. Ed was honored by Congressman John Yarmuth to represent the third District with a Xmas Tree Ornament for Mrs. Laura Bush’s Christmas Tree at the White House, December 2, 2008 Ed Hamilton has published two books, “The Birth of an Artist, a journey of discovery” and "Creating the Lincoln Memorial at Waterfront Park." He lives in Louisville, and has two children with his wife of 38 years, Bernadette.
